What Do You Give an Energy Advisor Who has Everything?

What is the most pleasing gadget you could give a Home Energy Advisor?

A Seek Compact camera, of course!

This wee gadget is a handy thermal imaging camera that plugs directly into your smartphone, rendering infrared light into a visible image on your phone or tablet.

And what is infrared radiation? Effectively, it is heat!

So, how does a thermal imaging camera work?

It records the intensity of infrared and converts it to a visible image. In other words, where our eyes see only in the light spectrum, the camera detects heat. We experience infrared radiation every day, the heat that we feel from sunlight, a fire or a radiator is infrared.

So, the camera allows temperature values to be read from the image. It can detect cold and hot spots in your home.

That is why we have incorporated it as part of our Home Energy Survey. For us, it is a unique tool that can map energy loss from your home, spotting missing insulation for example, without the use of any destructive methods.

Already, the Home Energy visits I have completed with the Seek camera have produced some interesting images. Here is what one of our clients had to say about our resulting thermal images;

‘I suspected that some of the bedroom walls weren’t properly insulated (as cold in winter and hot in summer), but there is no access behind the walls to see. I didn’t want to rip off all the plasterboard, so the thermal imaging camera was great, and showed up the cold spots, with no destruction! Now I know where to top up the insulation!’ – a HEAT client, Blairgowrie.
